REPRODUCTIVE Health
Women’s Health in TCM
In Traditional Chinese Medicine, women’s health is rooted in balance, healthy circulation, and the smooth flow of energy throughout the body. Rather than treating symptoms alone, Chinese medicine takes a holistic view — addressing hormones, digestion, sleep, stress, lifestyle and emotional well-being as key participants of health.
Acupuncture and herbal medicine are commonly used to support conditions such as menopause, PCOS, endometriosis, irregular cycles, painful periods, and fertility challenges, while also easing emotional shifts that often accompany PMS, including irritability, mood swings, and anxiety. In TCM, these symptoms are typically linked to imbalances in the Liver channel, which plays a key role in regulating hormones, blood flow, and emotional movement.
When Liver Qi becomes constrained, often due to stress or overwhelm, symptoms such as cramping, breast tenderness, bloating, headaches, and irritability may present. By encouraging the smooth flow of Qi in the Liver meridian, improving circulation, and calming the nervous system, acupuncture helps relieve pain, regulate cycles, and support emotional balance. Chinese medicine offers a gentle, individualized approach to women’s health — honoring the body’s natural rhythms and supporting each phase of life with care.
Through The Seasons
Acupuncture supports women through every season of their reproductive health, beginning with the menstrual cycle. Each cycle is unique and influenced by many factors, often presenting with a wide range of symptoms. Through the lens of Traditional Chinese Medicine, we look beyond the symptoms themselves to understand why they are occurring and identify the root cause. Are painful periods the result of cold in the uterus? Is bloating or breast tenderness caused by stagnant Qi and restricted flow? At The Healing Nest, our practitioners take the time to explore your menstrual concerns in depth — helping you gain clarity around both the “why” and the “how,” so your healing feels informed and empowering.
As we move through life, our bodies naturally draw upon what Chinese medicine calls Jing, or vital essence. Jing represents our foundational energy — once abundant, gradually declining over time. It is closely tied to vitality, libido, and reproductive health. As Jing slowly depletes, changes in energy levels and sex drive are common. At the same time, Yin — which governs cooling, moisture, and restorative nighttime energy — also diminishes. This shift can lead to symptoms such as heat rising, hot flashes, disrupted sleep, and changes in emotional balance.
We have had the privilege of supporting many women through these transitions, helping them restore balance and deepen their understanding of the body’s natural rhythms. With acupuncture and Chinese medicine, these changes can be met with greater ease, clarity, and harmony — supporting women in feeling more grounded, informed, and at home in their bodies through every phase of life.
Tools for Reproductive Health
Moxibustion
The Chinese medicinal herb "mugwort" is what makes up moxibustion or "moxa". It is used to help bring heat into the body, throughout the energetic meridians. We light the moxa poles similarly to an incense and hold it closely to specific acupuncture points or general areas of pain. Moxa is especially used in relieving discomfort in conditions such as endometriosis, dysmenorrhea (painful periods), ovarian cysts, and is frequently used to improve energy levels.
Acupuncture
There are 12 energetic meridians flowing through the body that correlate to specific organs. Acupuncture works to move stuck energy in these channels, promoting a smoother flow and reducing stagnations. We also have "extraordinary channels" which can be very powerful when it comes to treating the reproductive system. For instance, the Chong (an extraordinary channel) most closely pertains to menstrual cycle related conditions; our intention is to open this channel to release and alleviate pain experienced before, during or after menses.
HErbal formulas
Chinese herbal formulas have been used for thousands of years, and have been scientifically proven to create significant changes in the body. To support the reproductive system, we prescribe herbal formulas that aid in balancing the hormones, nourish deficiencies (blood or energy), and clear excesses (dampness, inflammation). Since herbs and nutrition go hand-in-hand, we also provide insight into nutritional shifts that can further assist in creating balance within the body.
